Being a Luddite with Carpentry

I used to create detailed carpentry plans on the computer. Hyper-accurate measurements and every possible angle. I even considered switching to SketchUp for 3D views, as advocated by so many books

But I never saw a computer on those carpentry shows. Does Norm Abram use a mouse? Maybe, but you’d never know.

So despite my proclivities, I opted to forgo the computer and limit myself to the whiteboard. It’d be tougher at first, but I’d eventually get more intuitive. And perhaps, hopefully, even become a better carpenter.

Is it working? Well, it’s too soon to say. But, I haven’t yelled at the whiteboard for rebooting. Less time in the office and more in the workshop. Quick changes on the fly.

So… I admit…. I take a picture of the whiteboard for archiving from time to time, but that’s about it…..

And I watch plenty of YouTube videos to learn techniques. They rarely, if ever, offer a glimpse of a computer.

Crazy, or am I on to something? Let me know 🙂

  1. I am with you Kevin…I prefer a pencil and paper and make changes on the fly whether it’s framing a wall or building a cabinets etc. I might try the white board though. I really think there is an art and science to making most everything, when brewing beer I use just enough science to make it safe to drink but more art to experiment with different flavors, carbonation, etc….I prefer art over science, I am not an engineer 🙂
