2) New Shelving: Shelves in Place!

The IKEA Billy bookcases have been put into place! Again, the goal is to add enough molding and customization to hide the fact that they’re simple IKEA Billy bookshelves (with glass shelves and doors).

On the next post I’ll cover the molding and additional hardware installed to make them look like custom built-ins.

1) Purchasing the shelving at IKEA

In line with the shelves on two carts. Five shelving units, 10 door panels, and 10 glass shelves. Yes, we managed to get all of this into our SUV.

2) The first shelf in place on the platform

The first shelf is in position (constructed and placed on the platform, but not secured yet).

3) One more to go; you can see the plastic sheet behind the shelves in the gap

The first four shelf units are in position. Heavy white plastic sits on top, behind, and to the sides to protect the contents from any potential future leaks.

4) Shelves in place and clamped to tighten the gaps

All five shelving units are in position. They’re clamped together to tighten the gaps between them.

I bolted them together after clamping to hold them in place (not wood screws, since they could loosen from the particle board).

5) Secured to the wall at each stud

IKEA provides plenty of hardware for mounting the shelving units to the wall to prevent them from tipping. I added a bracket at each stud (which also held down the plastic sheeting).

6) Shelves and glass doors in place!

All five units have been positioned, bolted together, secured to the wall at top, and have had their glass doors installed. Woo hoo!
